35624®, a Bidfidobacterium longum (formerly B.infantis) culture, is a market leading strain and now the No 1 recommended strain by US Gastroenterologsts and Doctors* for IBS. It is currently sold as a food supplement under the brand name Alflorex and as Align by our partner Proctor & Gamble. It is supported by 2 double blind placebo controlled clinical trials*, which have impacted on clinical management of gut disorders. These clinical trials showed that 35624® reduces all of the cardinal symptoms of IBS:
Bloating & gas
Urgent and unpredictable diarrhoea
The 35624® culture is now commercialised in over 15 countries worldwide.
The story of 35624®
There are billions of different bacteria in the human gut, each with individual properties so discovering the Bifidobacterium longum 35624® strain with its impact on IBS symptoms was the result of many years of research and testing.
Our researchers hypothesised that the microbiome played a key role in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which at that time was seen as an improbable situation. However, by careful selection of populations with excellent gut health, an extensive analysis of their microbiome started.
Thousands of gut bacteria were tested and screened for the required activity. Amongst them, several stood out and eventually 2 were selected for human clinical trials. The trials were carried out with leading scientists and clinicians and to gold standards: double blind, placebo-controlled and replicated across 2 separate trials.
Since then, healthcare professionals have trusted 35624® and incorporated it into their treatment pathways. It has also been recognised by the World Gastroenterology Organisation.
1714-Serenitas® strain in Zenflore®
Zenflore is the worlds first supplement harnessing the unique 1714-Serenitas® bacterial culture. The special 1714-Serenitas® culture in Zenflore has been clinically studied in people with everyday stress.
Evidence shows that microbes in the gut can act on the gut-brain axis and hence influence gut-brain communications. A key physical link that relays the information between the gut and the brain is the vagus nerve. This nerve relays information using molecules called neurotransmitters (chemical messengers). Approximately 80-90% of nerve fibres in the vagus nerve are going from the gut to the brain.
The gut produces more than 90% of the serotonin found in the body - this is a neurotransmitter that can affect mood and feelings of happiness and pleasure and research has shown that gut bacteria can impact its production in the gut.
The 1714® culture is part of an exciting R&D plan that includes clinical studies on:
the management of stress
cognition and learning
