The My New Gut project is Europe's largest investigation into the potential of the human gut microbiome to impact public health

The human gut is home to a vast and incredibly diverse bacterial eco-system known as the microbiota. Our bodies contain about 10 times more bacterial cells than human cells and there is now a large body of scientific evidence that demonstrates our microbiota, and its genetic structure or microbiome, play a crucial role in our physical and mental health. Our microbiome affects the way our bodies process food, defend against infection and how our brain functions. A better understanding of the relationship between our genes and our microbiomes could lead to a whole range of dietary interventions which may prevent diet-related and behavioural disorders such as obesity, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, type 2 diabetes and many more.

Alimentary Health is proud to be a part of the My New Gut project. An EU funded consortium of 32 companies, universities and institutions tasked with investigating how the human gut microbiota influence behavioural and lifestyle related disorders and how our behaviour and lifestyle affects our gut microbiota. The project also aims to identify specific dietary strategies to improve the long term health of populations.

"The human micrbiome has enournmas potential to umprove the lives of millions of people around the world, we are delighed to contribute to such an important and exciting scientific colaberation." Eileen Murphy, Research Director, Alimentary Helth
