AH
believes that an understanding of the interactions between
human gut flora (probiotics) and the human immune system
will lead to the development of a new generation of natural,
safe treatments for major diseases. It is now believed
that human health and well-being are based on a condition
of "homeostasis", or an equilibrium between
the numerous systems in the body that control the range
of bodily functions and the environment, be it internal,
in the gut, or external.
It
has been suggested that this state of homeostasis is,
in part, a result of the co-evolution of the host immune
system and its gastrointestinal flora over millions of
years. This provides for a tantalising and exciting scientific
rationale that the gut flora is a potential repository
of therapeutic bio-actives for a number of major disease
conditions.
AH’s
research programme is designed to investigate and deliver
on this potential.
The
strength of AH’s scientific programme and focus on research
has enabled the company to broaden its GI franchise and
pursue other indications associated with the basic mechanisms
of action of its technology. For example, some preclinical
evidence for symptom reduction in animal models of arthritis
suggests that there may also be therapeutic benefit from
AH technology in systemic inflammatory conditions as well
as in the gastrointestinal tract.
