The
Irritable Bowel Syndrome ("IBS") market is a
large and under penetrated market (estimated to affect
between 9 and 12% of the Western adult population) and
is therefore an attractive one for the development of
novel, safe and efficacious therapies. Given its prevalence,
analysts predict that IBS could represent a global market
on par with the current gastroesophageal reflux disease
("GERD") market estimated at more than $13.5bn
in 2003 according to Ashburn et al in Nature Reviews Drug
Discovery April 2006 edition and depression estimated
at $16bn in 2002 by Datamonitor.
AH
has successfully conducted two positive clinical studies
in this indication, with a lead candidate product which
it believes meets the aforementioned criteria.
The
results of the initial clinical trial supporting
this product made the cover and has been published in
the March 2005 Edition of GASTROENTEROLOGY, a global
peer reviewed gastrointestinal medical journal - the most
cited publication in Gastroenterology in 2006.
The
results of the second study have been presented
at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) in Chicago in May, the
World Congress of Gastroenterology in Montreal in September,
and the American College of Gastroenterology in Honolulu
in October 2005, and published in the American Society
of Gastroenterology Journal.
Based upon these studies and following a six year research
alliance, Procter & Gamble have licensed the global Over
the Counter ("OTC") gastrointestinal ("GI")
rights to this technology from AH and subsequently launched
an OTC dietary supplement product on the U.S market in
October 2005.
This
product, a scientifically selected proprietary probiotic
bacterium, is based on AH’s lead candidate probiotic B.
infantis 35624 which has been clinically proven to
reduce the severity of the symptoms of IBS and is marketed
under the brand name - Align.
