Alimentary Health (AH) is an innovative Irish healthcare company headquartered in Cork and a global pioneer in discovery, development and commercialisation of proprietary probiotic and pharmabiotic treatments. Having achieved leadership in Ireland with our flagship product Alflorex® and with a range of new “PrecisionBiotics” products on the horizon, we are looking to recruit an experienced Microbiologist to join the Research and Development (R&D) team and support pipeline, product development and quality control (QC) programmes. The successful candidate will have a solid background in microbiology and strong demonstrated hands-on experience in fermentation of probiotics and lactic acid bacteria. The position is initially on a full time fixed-term basis and will be located at the AH R&D Lab based in the Moorepark Campus, Teagasc Food Research Centre, Fermoy.


Key responsibilities

  • Execute microbial fermentations at 1-6 L scale to support process development / improvement of AH proprietary Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains.

  • Execute microbiology and molecular biology SOPs for QC, viability and stability testing of AH strains in lab cultures, pre-commercial actives, clinical and finished products.

  • Support research activities related to the screening, discovery and characterization of novel microbiome-based probiotics to produce the next generation of products.

  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all analytical and experimental work performed and record results in electronic databases.

  • Analyse and interpret results, prepare technical reports to provide conclusions / recommendations.

  • Report activities progress and results to management and R&D team during weekly meetings.

  • Manage inventories of samples, products and consumables, and ensure proactive supply of stocks.

  • Train and provide guidance to research students assisting with QC and research activities.

  • Work according to GLP standards and the health & safety procedures of the R&D Lab.

  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.


Qualifications, Experience & Skills

  • MSc or PhD in Microbiology, Bioengineering or a related discipline with a minimum of 2 years of academic and/or industry experience in microbial fermentation.

  • Excellent hands-on expertise in running and optimizing microbial culture processes under controlled conditions and in maintaining and operating lab/pilot-scale fermenters and bioreactors.

  • Good microbiology skills with experience of propagating, banking, genotyping and enumerating facultative and strict anaerobes, including Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria.

  • Experience of DNA/RNA purification and QC, setup and analysis of PCR assays.

  • Good PC skills and knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

  • Excellent technical and analytical skills with attention to details and a drive for high-quality results.

  • A ‘can-do’ attitude, comfortable with frequent change and working under pressure to tight deadlines.

  • Able to work independently and in team, with strong organisational, time-management and communication skills.
