Alimentary Health (AH) is an innovative Irish healthcare company and a global pioneer in discovery, development and commercialisation of proprietary bacterial and pharmabiotic treatments. Our new and breakthrough scientific research is recognised around the world as being at the cutting edge of discovery and application. AH is the foundation industry partner of the APC Microbiome Institute based at University College Cork, Ireland.

An international business, AH is centred on targeting health indications and exploiting applications arising from its core bacterial strains and derivatives via:

  • Basic and applied research into novel applications
  • Research partnerships in applications for Food, Food Supplement, Medical Food and Rx products
  • Marketing of a range of proprietary brands for the clinical and consumer markets

AH's mission is to develop clinically supported microbiome based healthcare and nutritional products that health professionals can believe in. The company focuses on isolation, characterization, clinical evaluation and formulation of unique bacterial strains and their actives for inflammatory and infectious conditions, reflecting our expertise in gastrointestinal medicine, the brain-gut axis, metabolic health and nutrition.

Since 1999, approximately 150 peer reviewed publications on AH’s strains have been published, many of which have been influential in understanding the beneficial nature of the relationship between bacteria and the human digestive system. In fact, two key scientific papers detailing the clinical work of AH’s lead 35624™ strain of Bifidobacterium infantis  in Irritable Bowel Syndrome have been cited more than 1,000 times in scientific literature since their publication.

History

In 1999, a pioneering group of leading academics and medical professionals from the Departments of Microbiology, Medicine and Food Science at University College Cork came together to start a company, Alimentary Health Ltd., that would make a real impact in delivering the therapeutic promise of the human microbiome. From an initial vision in digestive health, their belief in the potential of bacterial strains quickly grew to other areas where inflammation plays a primary role such as obesity, metabolic syndrome and cognitive function.

Historically, the business focused on Research & Development to develop novel therapeutic/ medicalised microbiome based bacterial products, for gastrointestinal health, to be licensed to large global marketing partners. One such probiotic was successfully licensed  to Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 2005 and the resultant product was launched nationwide in the U.S. in 2009 and in Canada in 2012 under the brand name Align®. An ‘Over the Counter’ (OTC) product for managing the symptoms of IBS, Align® addresses a condition impacting 10 to 20% of the population globally, (See www.AlignGI.com). The active technology in the brand is solely based on our lead proprietary 35624™ culture.
